Breeding Alpacas
Our Colorado alpaca farm is selecting and breeding alpacas for robustness and fiber production. Since fiber production is the primary purpose of alpaca farming, breeding the animals for fiber quality and quantity is the most important asset - behind animal health and robustness. Our initial animals were selected carefully for their desirable genetic traits, fleece qualities, fineness, conformation, overall health and appearance, temperament, and solid colors. After successful birthing seasons, our herd size has increased to the point where we are now sharing the results of our careful breeding program by offering some of our quality huacaya alpacas for sale.

Boarding Alpacas
One successful way to get started and establish your alpaca herd, especially if you do not have a farm or are not ready to have animals, is through boarding (agistment). Agistment can be either for an indefinite period of time or until you are ready to take your alpacas home.

Agistment is where, for a small fee, we keep your animals and look after them for you. You get to visit the animals and make all the big decisions relating to your alpacas. It is an effective way of getting started for those without immediate access to land or adequate infrastructure (barn, pasture and fencing) and is a cost effective way of investing in this emergent industry. Agistment provides a way of reaping the benefits of your investment without the day to day commitment of looking after your animals and is ideal for those who would like to invest in one starter animal allowing it to be kept within a herd so it will not be stressed by isolation. It is perfect for people building up a herd of their own for a future commitment or merely dabbling in a lucrative investment opportunity.

If you are new to Alpacas and you don’t own acreage, boarding (agistment) alpacas is an option for you. This type of ownership enables you to build your herd while you plan for purchasing acreage and still supplement your income and gain some of the tax advantages at the same time. You, as the owner, may visit your alpacas on the farm, get involved in their care and training as much or as little as you like, and make decisions related to breeding, show competition and sales. Once a female is bred and delivers her cria, you have already increased your initial investment in alpaca "stock". Boarding is $4.00 / day which includes daily care, feeding, supplements and electrolytes when needed. Also included is routine care. Shearing costs are not included. Contact CrossWind Alpacas today for more information on boarding your Alpacas.
